Minnesota United are reportedly engaged in discussions with Colombian football star James Rodríguez for a potential move to Major League Soccer (MLS). Sources indicate that the attacking midfielder, who is currently a free agent, has been in search of a new club to secure regular playing time leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he aims to represent Colombia.
Rodríguez became available after terminating his contract with Liga MX side Club León in December 2025. According to The Athletic, the 34-year-old is considering a move to the United States, which would make him the most prominent name to ever play for Minnesota United.
If the transfer materializes, Minnesota United would become the seventh club Rodríguez has played for since 2020. Since his departure from Real Madrid in 2020, he has played for Everton (England), Al-Rayyan (Qatar), Olympiacos (Greece), São Paulo (Brazil), Rayo Vallecano (Spain) and Club León (Mexico). During his time with León, he made 34 appearances, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.
Despite not having played since late 2025, Rodríguez remains a key player for the Colombian national team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. He was praised for his performance at the 2024 Copa América held in the United States, where he was named the tournament's best player after leading Colombia to the final against Argentina. Throughout his career, Rodríguez has earned 122 caps for Colombia, scoring 31 goals.
Minnesota United finished fourth in the Western Conference in the 2025 MLS regular season. The team was later eliminated by San Diego in the conference semifinals. Last month, Cameron Knowles was appointed as the head coach, following Eric Ramsay's departure to West Bromwich Albion of the EFL Championship. Rodríguez's potential arrival would provide veteran leadership and international experience. His creative skills could significantly improve the club's attacking options. His signing would also raise Minnesota United's profile both domestically and internationally.
While an agreement is likely, there are still hurdles to clear before Minnesota can sign the Colombian star midfielder.
