SS Rajamouli Acknowledges Ramayana's Influence on His Films, Highlighting Varanasi's Connection to His Creative Vision

In a recent interview, acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli revealed the profound influence of the Ramayana on his filmography, confirming that his upcoming film, "Varanasi," will directly feature an episode from the epic. Rajamouli stated, "All my films are inspired by the epics of (lord) Rama. In this film, I have a chance to actually take an actual episode from Ramayana itself and present it in this way". This revelation has heightened anticipation for "Varanasi," already considered one of Rajamouli's most ambitious projects.

"Varanasi" promises to be a globetrotting action-adventure rooted in Indian cultural themes. The film's narrative spans multiple timelines and locations, including Antarctica, Varanasi, Kenya, 512 CE, 2027 CE, and even the Treta Yuga, the age of Lord Rama. The film will be shot in IMAX. Rajamouli felt it was necessary to film in IMAX to capture the film's epic scale. A significant portion of the film, approximately 25 minutes, will delve into Indian mythology, specifically drawing from the Ramayana.

The film stars Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, the protagonist, who is seen wielding a trident and riding a bull through the streets of Varanasi. Priyanka Chopra will play Mandakini, and Prithviraj Sukumaran will portray the antagonist, Kumbha.

"Varanasi" has been in the making for over a decade, with initial discussions between Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu beginning in 2010. The project officially launched in January 2025 with a puja ceremony, and principal photography commenced the following month in Hyderabad. Filming has taken place extensively in Hyderabad, as well as in Odisha and Kenya.

With a reported budget of ₹1,000-1,300 crore (approximately $120-150 million), "Varanasi" is poised to be one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. The film boasts music by M. M. Keeravani, cinematography by P. S. Vinod, and visual effects by V. Srinivas Mohan.

"Varanasi" is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with the festival of Ugadi. The film will explore father-son relationships, echoing the bond between Rama and Dasharatha. Rajamouli believes that despite the film's grand scale, it is these relatable human emotions that will resonate with audiences. "Varanasi" is also the first Indian film and the first non-English film to be shot in the 1.43:1 IMAX format.
