Delhi Jal Board Engineers Face Suspension After Biker's Fatal Fall Into Large Pit; Negligence Suspected.

In the wake of a tragic incident in Delhi, three engineers from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) have been suspended following the death of a 25-year-old motorcyclist who fell into a large construction pit. The incident occurred in the Janakpuri area of West Delhi, sparking outrage and accusations of negligence against the DJB and the police.

The victim, identified as Kamal Dhyan, was found dead at the bottom of a "pool-sized" pit near Green Valley Apartments on Joginder Singh Marg on Friday morning. Dhyan was wearing a helmet, and his Apache RTR 200 motorcycle was found alongside his body. The pit had been dug by the DJB for construction work.

Dhyan's family alleges that they searched for him throughout the night after he didn't return home and his phone became unreachable. They claim to have visited multiple police stations in West Delhi, seeking information, but received little assistance. According to the family, they were only informed about the discovery of his body at the excavation site at 7:00 AM on Friday.

The family has criticized the police for their alleged lack of prompt action during the search. A friend of Dhyan claimed he went to six police stations overnight but didn't get help and that no complaint was filed until morning. A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) has pledged to investigate the police's handling of the case and the circumstances surrounding the pit's safety.

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood is set to inspect the site on February 7, 2026. The Delhi government has taken cognizance of the incident and assured action.

The incident has drawn comparisons to a recent case in Noida, where a software engineer drowned in a similar waterlogged pit. These incidents have raised concerns about safety protocols followed by construction agencies in the Delhi-NCR region. Initial reports suggest that the construction site lacked adequate barricading and warning signs. While a senior police officer claimed that the DJB site was "properly barricaded," photos from the scene have led the family to accuse the department of gross negligence.

The three DJB engineers were suspended by cabinet minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma. Police have registered a case, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the inquiry into whether the site met safety standards. Dhyan's body has been shifted for a post-mortem examination.
