Kuala Lumpur, February 7, 2026 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Malaysia. This marks Modi's third visit to Malaysia, and the first since the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi expressed his eagerness to deepen defence and security ties, enhance economic and innovation partnerships, and expand collaboration into new domains. He is scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday, February 8, with several agreements expected to be signed to further expand cooperation between the two nations.

In a statement prior to his departure, Modi highlighted the steadfast progress in the historic ties between India and Malaysia in recent years. He conveyed his anticipation for discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to further enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership.

The visit has a multifaceted agenda, with a strong emphasis on economic cooperation. PM Modi is expected to address the 10th India-Malaysia CEO Forum, underscoring the importance of economic and business collaborations between the two countries. Discussions will also cover trade, the digital economy, and investment opportunities. In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and India reached RM79.49 billion (USD18.59 billion). Malaysia's exports to India were valued at RM52.30 billion (USD12.24 billion), while imports from India totaled RM27.19 billion (USD6.35 billion).

Security cooperation is another key area of focus during the visit. Both leaders are expected to explore ways to deepen defence and security ties between the two countries. Other areas of collaboration that will be discussed include labor, tourism, connectivity, agriculture, and education. Regional and international issues of mutual interest will also be addressed.

A highlight of PM Modi's visit is his interaction with the Indian diaspora in Malaysia. Numbering nearly three million, the Indian community represents one of the largest Indian diasporas in the world. PM Modi acknowledged their immense contribution to Malaysia's progress and their role as a living bridge between the two nations. He is scheduled to address the Indian community at an event in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, this visit reciprocates Anwar's official visit to India in August 2024. The ministry anticipates that the visit will further strengthen bilateral relations and foster enhanced cooperation in areas of mutual benefit. An official welcoming ceremony will be held at Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya on Sunday, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex. Following the meeting, both leaders are scheduled to witness exchanges of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in the fields of combating and preventing corruption, standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers and disaster management, an agreement on audio-visual production, and a memorandum of understanding in other fields.
