In response to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's press briefing regarding alleged connections between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan, Gogoi has dismissed the conference as a "super flop show". The Chief Minister's accusations and the subsequent investigation have ignited a political firestorm in Assam, months ahead of the Assembly elections.
Sarma has claimed that the investigation into Gogoi's alleged Pakistan links is a matter of national security, asserting that any political ramifications are secondary. He stated that a Pakistani national and a British citizen play "central roles" in the matter, though he did not reveal their names. Later reports identified the British citizen as Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, and the Pakistani national as Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sarma alleges that Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi worked in Pakistan from March 2011 to March 2012 and has close ties with Sheikh. He further claimed that Sheikh violated FCRA rules to pay Colburn's salary while she was working in India.
Gogoi, responding to the allegations, criticized the press conference, calling it "worse than a C grade cinema" and a "super flop". He also referred to Sarma as "so-called political shrewd" CM of Assam, and said that the briefing offered "most mindless and bogus points".
The Assam Cabinet has decided to transfer the case concerning Gogoi's alleged Pakistan links to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), citing national security implications. Sarma stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the state government to investigate what he termed an "anti-India conspiracy" had submitted its report.
Sarma has alleged that Gogoi undertook a "very confidential" visit to Pakistan in 2013 and may have undergone "some kind of training" there. He also claimed that Gogoi maintained "digital silence" during his visit and was permitted to travel to Islamabad and Karachi following intervention from the Pakistani government. Furthermore, Sarma has accused Gogoi of attempting to legitimize Pakistan. He also said, "An Indian MP's wife was effectively managed by Pakistan" and that Sheikh, who has links to Pakistan's armed forces, deleted his India-related posts on X after the investigation began.
The Chief Minister has sharpened his accusations against Gogoi, even calling him a "Pakistani agent" and alleging that he was "planted by foreign powers" in India. He asserted that Gogoi and his family have strong ties with Pakistan and that the investigation team has received startling revelations. Sarma has stated his intention to make all details public soon and claimed to possess definite proof of Gogoi's activities on behalf of a foreign country.
