Mohan Bhagwat: RSS Leadership Reserved for Hindus, Caste Irrelevant to Selection Process.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat asserted on Sunday that only a Hindu can head the organization, but clarified that caste is not a determining factor in the selection process. Bhagwat emphasized that the most suitable candidate will be chosen for the role of Sarsanghchalak, regardless of their caste.

Bhagwat made these remarks during an interactive session at an event in Mumbai celebrating the RSS centenary. He addressed questions and speculations surrounding the selection of leadership within the organization. Bhagwat stated that the RSS does not adhere to community-based representation, and volunteers advance through the ranks based on their dedication and work within the Sangh.

"The head of the RSS is not selected through an election process. What is certain is that whoever is appointed as the RSS chief will be a Hindu, regardless of caste," Bhagwat said. He further elaborated that being a Brahmin is not a qualification, just as belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST) is not a disqualification. The organization prioritizes merit and the availability of the best candidate at the time of selection. "If I were to choose a chief, I would go by the 'best available candidate' criterion," he added.

Addressing the historical perception of the RSS as a Brahmin-dominated organization, Bhagwat explained that this perception stemmed from the RSS's origins in a locality with a predominantly Brahmin population, resulting in many early leaders being from that community. However, he emphasized that the organization has evolved and now includes members from all classes, dispelling the notion of caste-based preference. "As we spread geographically, we will have all classes; all classes are now represented in the RSS".

During the interactive session, Bhagwat also touched upon his tenure as the RSS chief. He revealed that he had informed the organization about turning 75, an age when individuals are generally expected to work without holding any official position. However, the RSS asked him to continue his work. "Whenever the RSS asks me to step down, I will do so, but retirement from work will never happen," he affirmed. He clarified that the RSS chief is appointed by regional and divisional heads, without any election process.

Bhagwat also expressed his views on various other topics during the event. He defended the reservation system, emphasizing that it should continue as long as there is a demand for it, considering centuries of discrimination. He further stressed the need for social unity and a sensitive approach to caste conflicts. Bhagwat said that caste now exists largely for selfish interests and political purposes as its traditional occupational basis has disappeared.

Bhagwat commented on the use of English within the RSS, stating that while it would not be the primary medium of communication, it would be used when necessary for effective communication. He also addressed concerns about population imbalance, religious conversions, and infiltration, emphasizing the need for government action and public awareness.
