A 790-page chargesheet has been filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, naming his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, as the main accused. The chargesheet also implicates her lover, Raj Kushwaha, and three others in the murder. The chargesheet was submitted to the Sohra Sub-Division Court.

Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi were married on May 11, 2025, in Indore and traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20. They went missing on May 23 from Sohra in the East Khasi Hills district, hours after checking out of a homestay. Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls, bearing stab wounds.

The investigation revealed that Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly intended to portray her husband's murder as a robbery gone wrong in Meghalaya. She planned to live as a widow for some time before convincing her family to allow her to marry Raj Kushwaha, who is alleged to have masterminded the murder. Police became suspicious of Sonam after hearing an audio call where she told her mother-in-law about fasting for Raja's health, but a hotel visit revealed she had eaten that day.

Sonam's mangalsutra and ring, left behind at a homestay, also raised suspicion. Technical surveillance revealed that Sonam was in constant contact with Kushwaha. Sonam surrendered at a police station in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the chargesheet, Sonam was in a relationship with Raj Kushwaha, and they conspired with three assailants to murder Raja under the guise of a honeymoon in Sohra. The murder was carried out by Akash Singh Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi in Sonam's presence. Police filed the chargesheet on September 5, before the 90-day deadline.

The SIT's investigation included recovered weapons, clothing traces, and digital records mapping a nine-hour murder plot. Local witnesses and intercepted communications corroborate the sequence of events, and Sonam's confessed extramarital relationship is cited as the motive. The owner of the building where Sonam stayed after the crime is also implicated for helping her conceal herself.

Police revealed that there were multiple failed attempts to murder Raja before the successful attempt at Weisawdong Falls. The accused had considered various methods, including making Sonam disappear or killing another woman to pass her off as Sonam. The initial plan was to kill Raja in Guwahati, but it was abandoned when Sonam planned to travel to Shillong and Sohra.

Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Kushwaha have admitted to their relationship and their role in Raja Raghuvanshi's murder. They recreated the crime scene for the police. Raja's family had requested a narco-analysis test on Sonam, but it was rejected because ample evidence was already in place against her and Raj.

All five individuals—Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, Akash Singh Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—are in judicial custody, charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder and conspiracy. A supplementary chargesheet targeting three additional accomplices is pending forensic reports.
