On Saturday, September 6, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron briefed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the "Coalition of the Willing" initiative aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Modi, in turn, reiterated India's support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the early restoration of peace.

Macron's call to Modi came two days after a meeting in Paris with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leaders of the "Coalition of the Willing". During the Paris meeting, Macron announced that 26 countries are prepared to provide troops or other military assistance to Ukraine after the conflict ends, as part of an effort to guarantee the nation's security. Leaders from 35 nations participated in the meeting, including Zelenskyy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Some attended in person, while others joined online.

Following his discussion with Modi, Macron stated that France and India share the same determination to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. He added that both countries would continue to move forward together to trace the path toward peace, building on their friendship and strategic partnership. Modi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of the India-France strategic partnership in fostering global peace and stability.

In addition to the Ukraine conflict, Macron and Modi discussed India-France relations, including cooperation in areas such as trade, defense, technology, and space. Modi noted that they had reviewed and positively assessed the progress in bilateral cooperation across various sectors. Macron also accepted Modi's invitation to attend an AI summit in India in 2026.

Prior to his conversation with Macron, Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. During that meeting, Modi conveyed India's support for all recent efforts to establish peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that it is humanity's call to find a way to resolve hostilities as soon as possible.

India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. The country has also emphasized the need for an early restoration of peace and stability in the region.
