Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, paying a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer and composer. Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Assam, attended a special tribute meeting dedicated to Hazarika, fondly known as "Sudha Kontho".

Addressing the gathering, Modi expressed that the day was remarkable and the moment precious. He lauded the performances, enthusiasm, and coordination displayed at the event, noting how deeply moving they were. The Prime Minister highlighted the resonance of Bhupen Hazarika's music, stating that it united India and inspired generations, reflecting the spirit of "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat". He emphasized that Hazarika always gave voice to India's unity and that the Bharat Ratna bestowed upon him reflects the government's commitment to the North East.

Modi recalled penning an article on September 8th, Bhupen Hazarika's birthday, to express his emotions and honor the artist. He considered it his privilege to participate in the centenary birth anniversary celebrations. The Prime Minister conveyed his wish for Bhupen Hazarika's melodies to continue flowing endlessly, expressing heartfelt appreciation to all the artists who participated in the event and commending their exceptional preparation.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of cultural connectivity for national unity. He urged citizens to be brand ambassadors of "Vocal for Local" and to take pride in Swadeshi products.

Prior to the event in Guwahati, Modi visited Manipur, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹7,300 crore. These projects include the Manipur Urban Roads, drainage and asset management improvement project, several National Highway projects, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, and Working Women Hostels at nine locations. He also inaugurated Mizoram's first railway line and flagged off the state's first Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with Delhi.

Later on Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 19,000 crore in Mangaldoi, Darrang district, and Numaligarh refinery in Golaghat. He will also address public meetings at both locations.
