The wife of a senior Finance Ministry official, who died in a road accident in Delhi, has alleged that the BMW driver involved in the incident deliberately avoided taking them to the nearest hospital after the crash. Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died after being hit by a BMW car while returning home on his motorcycle with his wife, Sandeep Kaur, on Sunday evening. Sandeep Kaur sustained critical injuries in the accident.
According to the Delhi Police, the accused, Gaganpreet, instead of taking the victims to the nearest hospital, drove them approximately 17 to 19 kilometers away to a private hospital in GTB Nagar, which is allegedly linked to an acquaintance. This decision has sparked controversy, with the couple's son questioning why his parents were taken to a hospital so far from the accident site when several medical facilities were closer.
In her police complaint, Sandeep Kaur stated that she requested Gaganpreet, the BMW driver, to take them to a nearby hospital, but her requests were ignored. She further alleged that they were put in a van and transported to a distant hospital where they were forced to wait on a stretcher before receiving first aid. Times Now reported the hospital was 22km away from the accident site.
Navnoor Singh, the son of the deceased, believes that his father's life could have been saved if he had been taken to a super-specialty hospital near the accident site instead of a hospital 20 km away that lacked adequate facilities. He also alleged that the hospital in GTB Nagar belongs to the family of Gaganpreet, the woman driving the car at the time of the accident. He claimed that those in the car sustained minor injuries and were in the same hospital, raising concerns about potential bias and conflict of interest.
Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) and are investigating the case under relevant sections of the law. Gaganpreet and her husband, Parikshit, have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and concealing evidence. The investigating team has also sought ownership documents of NUlife Hospital to establish any connection between the accused and the hospital. Police found the BMW lying sideways on the road and the motorcycle parked near the divider when they arrived at the accident site.
The police said that Navjot Singh was returning home from Bangla Sahib Gurudwara when the accident occurred. The family's allegations of deliberate delay and preferential treatment have added a new dimension to the case, raising questions about the motives behind taking the victims to a distant hospital.
