Future warfare: Defence minister urges preparation with advanced technology roadmap for swift and decisive engagements.

The nature of warfare is rapidly evolving, demanding a paradigm shift in preparedness and strategic thinking. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently addressed the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders' Conference, emphasizing that warfare is now being "measured in hours and seconds, not months". This compressed timeframe is driven by the integration of advanced technologies like satellites, drones, and sensors, which are redefining the landscape of conflict.

Singh urged the ICG to develop a "futuristic roadmap" that anticipates emerging challenges, integrates cutting-edge technologies, and continuously adapts strategies. He stressed that cyber and electronic warfare are no longer hypothetical scenarios but present-day realities. Nations might attempt to paralyze systems through hacking, cyber-attacks, and electronic jamming rather than through traditional missile attacks.

To counter these threats, the ICG must continuously adapt and upgrade its training and equipment. Automated surveillance networks and AI-enabled systems are essential to reduce response times to seconds and ensure constant readiness. Singh highlighted that India's extensive 7,500-km coastline and island territories present significant challenges, requiring advanced technology, well-trained personnel, and round-the-clock surveillance.

Maritime threats are becoming increasingly technology-driven and multi-dimensional. Predictable patterns of smuggling or piracy have evolved into sophisticated operations using GPS spoofing, remote-controlled boats, encrypted communications, drones, satellite phones, and even networks operating on the dark web. Terrorist organizations are also exploiting modern tools like digital mapping and real-time intelligence to plan their activities.

Singh emphasized that traditional methods are no longer sufficient. To stay ahead of criminals and adversaries, there is a need to integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning-based surveillance, drones, cyber defense systems, and automated response mechanisms into the maritime security framework. He also highlighted the importance of geopolitical awareness and readiness to respond swiftly to external developments, especially in light of instability in neighboring countries impacting coastal security.

The Defence Minister also lauded the ICG's transformation into a formidable force with 152 vessels and 78 aircraft, describing it as a vital pillar of national security. He commended its role in patrolling the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), deterring external threats, and addressing illegal activities such as fishing, drug and arms trafficking, smuggling, marine pollution, and irregular maritime activities.

Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India), noting that nearly 90% of the ICG's capital budget is spent on indigenous assets. This enhances operational strength while boosting India's shipbuilding sector and economy. He praised the ICG's seamless coordination with the Navy, civil administration, and other security agencies, as well as its swift disaster response and humanitarian operations, including the rescue of over 14,500 lives to date.

In conclusion, Rajnath Singh urged the ICG commanders to remain vigilant and innovative, emphasizing that India's progress towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 depends on both prosperity and security. He stressed that the ICG's dedication to protection will ensure a strong, secure, and self-reliant India for future generations.
