Lady Gaga on Motherhood: Yearning for Her Next Big Performance as a Mom

Lady Gaga recently shared her aspirations for motherhood, expressing her desire for it to be her "next starring role". In a pre-recorded interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, revealed that starting a family with her fiancé, Michael Polansky, is where her heart is right now.

"I would like to do many things," Gaga stated. "All of these things are open. But, what I really want is to be a mom. That's my next starring role, I hope".

This isn't the first time the "Mayhem" singer has spoken about her dreams of becoming a mother. In an interview with Access Hollywood following her engagement to Polansky in April 2024, she shared her hopes of embracing motherhood within the next decade. "I really want to be a mom," Gaga said with a smile. "The greatest vision I have is that". The couple has been romantically linked since 2020 and confirmed their engagement in July 2024.

Gaga, 39, has also spoken about how she and Polansky have discussed raising their future children. In a January interview with Elle, she explained, "That's something Michael and I have talked about a lot — allowing our kids to be their own people". She added, "It's such an intense thing for kids coming into the world. And they're told how to think and what to believe in and how to eat… I just kind of want to let my kids find out who they are". She also told Elle that she's "ready" to be humbled by motherhood.

In her recent interview with Stephen Colbert, Gaga expressed her feelings towards Polansky, stating that he is not just her partner but also her best friend. She praised him for his brilliance, kindness, and unwavering support, acknowledging that before him, she often felt like she was navigating life alone. "He always really saw me, and I think I always really saw him," she said, adding that their connection felt powerful from the start. "I think I felt for a long time like I was navigating this thing on my own, and it's hard. And it's not anymore. I'm very lucky".

Gaga has also publicly expressed her admiration for Polansky in an intimate Instagram post, sharing a heartfelt birthday message for him. "Happy Birthday to my honey. I hope 42 is your best year yet. You have done so much in your 42 years. I am so proud of you every day — and so grateful for this day you came into the world; it was the most special day," she wrote.

In a recent New York Times interview, Gaga reflected on how motherhood might fit into her life, admitting she is grappling with balancing her identity as an artist with making space for other things. "I'm also kind of at war with myself sometimes as I get ready to, hopefully, become a mom soon," she said. "Like, today is wonderful, but the whole day has revolved around me. There's an incredible amount of narcissism in this. How do I live a life where I'm passionate about my art while also making more space for other things?".

Speaking about how her future children might react to her career, Gaga said she wants them to understand that whatever her artistry means to them is entirely up to them. "I would never actually want to shape it or tell them how to think about me," she stated. "Maybe other than that, I just did my best and tried to stay true to myself along the way".
