Heavy monsoon downpours have unleashed widespread devastation across Nepal, triggering floods and landslides that have tragically claimed the lives of at least 51 people. Rescue teams, including the Armed Police Force (APF) and other disaster authorities, are actively engaged in search and rescue operations as several individuals remain missing amidst ongoing disruptions.

The eastern district of Ilam, located in the Koshi province, has been the hardest hit, with 37 fatalities reported due to landslides across multiple municipalities, including Deumai, Maijogmai, and Ilam itself. Other affected districts include Udayapur, Panchathar, Rautahat, Khotang, and Panchthar, where deaths have resulted from various incidents such as lightning strikes and rain-related road accidents. In the Langtang Conservation Area of Rasuwa district, four people are missing after being swept away by swollen rivers. Additionally, there are reports of individuals missing in Ilam, Bara, and Kathmandu districts.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by blocked roads and disrupted flights, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded, many of whom were returning after celebrating the Hindu festival of Dashain. The Nepal Army, Police, and Armed Police Force are actively involved in rescue operations, including airlifting survivors from affected areas.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has assured that government agencies are "fully prepared for rescue and relief". The government has declared a public holiday and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities are closely monitoring weather patterns and have issued red alerts for flood-prone areas, particularly around the Bagmati and East Rapti rivers. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to official advisories.

In response to the crisis, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged India's support to Nepal as a "friendly neighbour and first responder". Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life and damage caused by the heavy rains, stating that India is committed to providing any assistance required.

The monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September, brings widespread death and destruction to South Asia annually. However, experts suggest that climate change has exacerbated the frequency and intensity of these events. In June, the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development warned of heightened disaster risks during this monsoon season.
