Odisha government halts social media in Cuttack for 24 hours to curb communal unrest and maintain peace.

Cuttack, Odisha – In response to escalating communal tensions and violent clashes, the Odisha government has imposed a 24-hour ban on social media platforms in Cuttack, effective from 7 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2025, to 7 PM on Monday, October 6, 2025. The ban encompasses the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) area, the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) region, and the 42 Mouza zone.

The decision to suspend social media access, including platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter), was made to curb the spread of inflammatory content and misinformation, which authorities feared could further exacerbate the situation. The order was issued under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, directing a complete suspension of messaging and social media services, mobile internet and data services, and all forms of online transmission.

The unrest was triggered by violent clashes between two groups during Durga Puja idol immersion processions early Saturday morning. Reports indicate that the violence erupted around 1:30 AM to 2:00 AM in the Dargha Bazar area near Haathi Pokhari when the procession of the Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee was passing through a narrow stretch near Dargha Bazaar. Local Muslim residents allegedly objected to loud music being played during the procession, leading to heated arguments and, ultimately, physical altercations. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with stone-pelting, bottle-throwing, and attacks on vehicles and property.

Following the initial clashes, tensions remained high, and reports of fresh violence emerged on Sunday. In response, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organized a motorcycle rally, defying orders from the district administration. Participants chanted 'Jai Shri Ram' as they moved through key areas, including the Dargah Bazar locality.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has appealed to the residents of Cuttack to maintain peace and communal harmony. He assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and will take strict action against those responsible for inciting violence. Majhi described Cuttack as a city known for its rich heritage and tradition of brotherhood and expressed sorrow over the disturbances. He urged all communities to work together to preserve the city's legacy and not to fall prey to provocation or rumors.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has blamed "anti-social elements" for attempting to disrupt communal harmony. The Chief Minister has directed officials to provide free medical care to those injured in the clashes. Additional police forces have been deployed across sensitive areas of Cuttack, and prohibitory orders have been imposed to prevent further escalation. Police are using CCTV footage to investigate the incidents, and several arrests have already been made.
