Rishabh Pant is aiming to make a return to competitive cricket through the domestic route, specifically the Ranji Trophy, after recovering from a toe injury sustained in July during the Manchester Test against England. The injury forced him to miss several key tournaments and series, including the Asia Cup, the ongoing Test series against the West Indies, and the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia.
Pant has reportedly communicated his desire to represent Delhi in the Ranji Trophy to Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). He is eyeing a potential comeback in the round of matches starting on October 25. However, his participation is contingent upon receiving clearance from the BCCI's medical team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE).
According to sources within the BCCI, Pant's right foot is scheduled for assessment by the medical team this week, with a possibility of clearance by October 10. The medical team is exercising caution and wants to ensure Pant's complete fitness before allowing him to return to the field.
A DDCA official revealed that Pant has expressed his availability for Delhi's Ranji Trophy matches starting October 25, subject to fitness and the BCCI medical team's approval. While Pant has not committed to a specific date for joining the Delhi camp, it is unlikely that he will participate in the first-round Ranji Trophy match starting on October 15 due to the tight timeline. If he is available, there is a strong possibility that he will lead the team.
Pant sustained a fracture on his right foot during the fourth Test against England, after being struck by a delivery from Chris Woakes. Although initial estimates suggested a six-week recovery period, the metatarsal in his right foot snapped due to the pressure he exerted while batting the following day, prolonging his absence. However, he has shown significant improvement in the last few weeks.
India is scheduled to play a two-Test series against South Africa starting on November 14. Depending on his clearance from the CoE and his preparation, Pant may participate in a couple of Ranji Trophy matches until November 5.
With Dhruv Jurel currently keeping wickets in Tests and having scored a century in the recent series against West Indies, Pant's return could present a selection dilemma for the team management. It is possible that both Pant and Jurel could be included in the side, with Jurel potentially continuing his duties as the primary wicketkeeper.
