BCCI Addresses Speculation: Is This India vs. Australia ODI Series the End for Kohli & Sharma?

Recent speculation surrounding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day International (ODI) cricket has been addressed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Rumors had circulated suggesting that the upcoming ODI series against Australia might be the last for these two veteran batsmen, prompting concern among fans.

The BCCI Vice-President, Rajeev Shukla, has firmly refuted these claims. According to Shukla, the suggestion that this series would be the last for Kohli and Sharma is "absolutely wrong". He emphasized that the decision to retire rests solely with the players themselves. Shukla highlighted the immense value that Kohli and Sharma bring to the team, stating that their presence would significantly benefit India in the series against Australia.

These statements come in the wake of India's squad announcement for the three-match ODI series in Australia, which begins on October 19, 2025. Adding to the intrigue, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma. This transition in leadership, combined with Kohli and Sharma's return to the ODI squad, fueled speculation about their future in the format. Both Kohli and Sharma had previously retired from Test and T20I cricket.

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri believes that Kohli and Sharma will be highly motivated to perform well in the series. He noted that the duo's experience will be invaluable, especially with young players also vying for spots in the team. Shastri added that the series would be a good indicator of their form and hunger to continue playing.

Shubman Gill acknowledged the immense contributions of Kohli and Sharma to Indian cricket. He recognized their experience and skills, stating that they have won numerous matches for the country. Gill also mentioned that he has learned a lot from Rohit Sharma, particularly his calmness and ability to bond with players, qualities he hopes to emulate as captain.

Anil Kumble, the former India spinner, suggested that instead of speculating about their future, fans should celebrate their accomplishments and enjoy watching them play. He noted that with Rohit Sharma no longer the captain, he is free from those burdens and responsibilities.

The ODI series against Australia marks Kohli and Sharma's return to international cricket since India's ICC Champions Trophy victory earlier in the year. The three-match ODI series will be held in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney on October 19, 23 and 25 respectively. Following the ODI series, India and Australia will compete in a five-match T20I series.
