Mumbai, October 15, 2025 – The film and television industry mourned the loss of veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, who passed away today at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer. Dheer, best known for his iconic portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra's "Mahabharat," breathed his last in Mumbai. His cremation was held today at 4:30 pm at the Pawanhans Crematorium in Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.
Among those who arrived to pay their respects was Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Khan, known for his close ties with many in the industry, was seen offering condolences to Dheer's son, actor Nikitin Dheer, and other members of the family. Khan's presence at the funeral, amidst tight security, underscored the respect and admiration he held for the veteran actor. Videos circulating online show Khan arriving at the crematorium, his face reflecting the somber mood of the day. He was seen embracing Nikitin Dheer, offering solace during this difficult time.
Pankaj Dheer's death was confirmed by the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), where he had served as the former Hon. General Secretary and erstwhile Chairman of the trust. CINTAA released a statement expressing their profound grief and sorrow at his passing, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to Indian cinema and television.
Dheer's battle with cancer had been ongoing for some time, with reports suggesting he had undergone a major surgery recently after a relapse. While he initially showed signs of recovery, his health deteriorated in recent weeks.
Pankaj Dheer’s career spanned decades, with memorable roles in television shows like "Chandrakanta," "The Great Maratha," and "Yug," as well as Bollywood films such as "Sadak," "Soldier," and "Baadshah". However, it was his portrayal of Karna in "Mahabharat" that etched him into the hearts of millions, with many considering his performance the definitive depiction of the mythological warrior. His co-star from "Mahabharat," Arjun Feroz Khan, who played the role of Arjun, shared photos on Instagram, expressing his sorrow.
Beyond acting, Dheer was also involved in entrepreneurship, co-founding a shooting studio and an acting academy. He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, a costume designer, his son Nikitin Dheer, and daughter-in-law Kratika Sengar Dheer, both of whom are also actors.
