Delhi Rocked by Explosion Near Red Fort, Gautam Gambhir Expresses Condolences

New Delhi, India – A high-intensity explosion near the historic Red Fort in Delhi has resulted in at least eight fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting widespread concern and a flurry of responses from prominent figures. The blast, which occurred on Monday evening around 6:52 p.m. local time, involved a car parked near the Red Fort metro station. The incident triggered a massive fire, engulfing several vehicles and causing chaos in the densely populated area.

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, reacted to the tragedy with a message of support and grief. "Saddened by the loss of lives due to the blast in Delhi," Gambhir posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Praying for strength to the families of deceased and for the speedy recovery of injured."

According to initial reports, a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light outside the Red Fort when an explosion occurred within the car. The impact of the blast damaged nearby vehicles, with at least six cars and three auto-rickshaws catching fire. Firefighting teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the blaze was brought under control by approximately 7:29 p.m..

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha stated that the cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Forensic teams and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are on site, collecting evidence and examining the wreckage.

The incident has prompted a high alert across Delhi, with security measures being intensified at key installations, including airports and metro stations. Several other states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal, have also been placed on high alert, with police forces increasing vigilance to prevent any potential untoward incidents. Security around the Arun Jaitley Stadium, located a few kilometers from the blast site, will also be increased for the final day of a Ranji Trophy match.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described scenes of panic and devastation. One resident recounted hearing a "big sound" that shook windows, while a local shopkeeper described falling from his chair due to the force of the explosion. "I never heard such a loud explosion ever in my life," the shopkeeper told ANI, "When the blast happened I was sitting on a chair in my shop and I fell three times due to the explosion, I thought the earth was going to burst." Another eyewitness described seeing a hand on the road amidst the chaos.

Political figures have also expressed their condolences and concerns. President Murmu conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly taking stock of the situation and has spoken with Home Minister Amit Shah and other officials. Amit Shah also visited the injured at LNJP hospital. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the incident as "extremely painful and disturbing". Congress party chief Mallikarjun Kharge called for a thorough investigation and accountability for any security lapses.

The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal-era fort, is a major tourist attraction and a significant national monument. The Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from its ramparts every year on August 15, India's Independence Day.
