Edmonton, AB – In a thrilling comeback victory, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in overtime on Monday night at Rogers Place. Jack Roslovic, a Columbus native and former Blue Jacket, sealed the win with a backhand goal 56 seconds into overtime.
The Oilers entered the game looking to snap a three-game losing streak, while the Blue Jackets aimed to break a three-game skid of their own. The game started with high energy, featuring a physical bout between Trent Frederic and Mathieu Olivier early in the first period. Ivan Provorov scored first for Columbus, but Jake Walman responded for Edmonton, tying the game.
Columbus regained the lead in the second period with a goal from Sean Monahan. Boone Jenner extended the Blue Jackets' lead to 3-1 before the period ended.
The Oilers mounted their comeback in the third period. Connor McDavid scored early in the third, narrowing the deficit. Adam Fantilli responded for Columbus, pushing the lead to 4-2. McDavid then scored again, followed by a late goal from Walman, tying the game at 4-4 and forcing overtime. Walman's second goal came with just under a minute left in regulation.
In overtime, Jake Walman delivered a long stretch pass to Jack Roslovic, who scored on a breakaway to secure the win for the Oilers.
Connor McDavid and Jake Walman each contributed two goals for the Oilers. Ivan Provorov, Sean Monahan, Boone Jenner, and Adam Fantilli scored for the Blue Jackets. Stuart Skinner made 15 saves for Edmonton. Jet Greaves had 19 saves for Columbus.
The Oilers' victory marked a significant turnaround after a 9-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Coach Kris Knoblauch had emphasized the need for a higher standard of play. McDavid acknowledged the team's belief in their ability to improve, stating that "enough is enough" and emphasizing the importance of a strong start.
The Blue Jackets have now lost four straight games. They are nearing the end of a five-game road trip.
The Oilers will now embark on a seven-game road trip.
