In the aftermath of the deadly car explosion near Delhi's historic Red Fort on Monday evening, investigations have zeroed in on a doctor from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, as a key suspect. Dr. Umar Mohammad, has emerged as the prime suspect, with authorities exploring his links to a terror module with connections to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
The blast, which occurred around 6:52 PM near a traffic signal close to the Red Fort metro station, resulted in at least 8 fatalities and left 19 others injured. The explosion, believed to have been triggered in a white Hyundai i20, also damaged several other vehicles and nearby structures.
Dr. Umar Mohammad, born on February 24, 1989, in Pulwama, was a doctor at Al Falah Medical College in Faridabad. Investigators are exploring the possibility that he was the occupant of the car and are conducting DNA testing on recovered body parts to confirm his presence in the vehicle.
The investigation has revealed potential connections between Dr. Umar and a terror network that was recently busted in Faridabad. Prior to the blast, police had arrested two doctors, Adeel Ahmad Rather and Muzammil Shakil, for their involvement in the "white collar" terror module. It is alleged that Dr. Umar was a close associate of these individuals. Following these arrests, Dr. Umar reportedly panicked, potentially leading him to trigger the blast.
The police are investigating if the same explosives recovered in the Faridabad raid were used in the Delhi blast. During the raid in Faridabad, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with Haryana Police, recovered a substantial amount of IED-making material, believed to be ammonium nitrate.
The investigation has uncovered a network of individuals potentially connected to the terror module. It is suspected that the module had at least four doctors involved. Several individuals from Pulwama have been detained for questioning, including the alleged current owner of the car.
In light of the blast, Delhi Police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Explosives Act. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guard (NSG) are also involved in the investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and spoken with Home Minister Amit Shah, assuring a thorough investigation. Shah visited the blast site and met with the injured, promising a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
