Tripura in mourning: Assembly speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen passes away, state observes period of grief.

Tripura is in mourning following the death of Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, who passed away at the age of 72 in a private hospital in Bengaluru. Sen had been receiving treatment after suffering a severe brain haemorrhage in August. He remained in critical condition despite undergoing emergency surgery in Agartala and being airlifted to Bengaluru for advanced medical care.

The Tripura government has declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect. All government offices, institutions, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions will remain closed on Friday. Sen's mortal remains are expected to arrive in Tripura on Saturday.

Biswa Bandhu Sen was a veteran political leader who served as the Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly. He was a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura district. Born on May 23, 1953, Sen began his political journey with the Indian National Congress (INC) and was elected twice on the party's ticket. Later, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He won a fourth consecutive term in the 2023 Assembly elections.

Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed profound grief over Sen's demise, calling it an "irreparable loss" for the state. In a social media message, Saha extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and followers, praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul and strength for the family to overcome the difficult time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, acknowledging Sen's contributions to Tripura's progress. "Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly," Modi stated on X. "He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura's progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti".

Across party lines, legislators and citizens have conveyed their shock and sorrow, remembering Biswa Bandhu Sen as a disciplined legislator and a dignified Speaker who upheld the sanctity of the House. Sen was known for his calm demeanor, administrative acumen, and firm commitment to parliamentary traditions.
