On Veer Bal Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the youth of India, particularly those of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, to break free from the "mental slavery" instilled by British colonialist Lord Macaulay and to dedicate themselves to building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). Speaking at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Friday, December 26, 2025, Modi emphasized that these generations possess the capabilities and confidence to lead India towards its goal of becoming a developed nation.
Veer Bal Diwas commemorates the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, the sons of Guru Gobind Singh, who demonstrated unwavering courage and sacrifice in the face of tyranny. Modi highlighted their bravery as an inspiration for the youth, urging them to uphold their principles and contribute to nation-building. He noted that the Sahibzadas defied age and circumstance, standing firm against the Mughal Sultanate's religious fanaticism.
Modi criticized the colonial education system implemented by Macaulay, which aimed to undermine India's cultural and linguistic richness. He stressed the importance of reclaiming India's heritage and taking pride in its multilingual diversity, a rare phenomenon globally. He pointed to the increasing use of Indian languages in Parliament as a sign of progress, with over 160 speeches delivered in languages other than English.
The Prime Minister also took aim at previous regimes, stating that even after independence, attempts were made to suppress the truth and maintain a mentality of servitude. He asserted that India has now decided to break free from this mindset and embrace its own identity. Modi highlighted the New Education Policy (NEP), which prioritizes practical learning, critical thinking, and questioning over rote memorization, as a key step in shaping a Viksit Bharat. He lauded initiatives like Atal Tinkering Labs for fostering innovation and design thinking among children.
Modi expressed his belief in the power of India's youth to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. He encouraged them to dream big, work hard, and maintain their confidence, drawing inspiration from national ideals and great personalities. He advised them to focus on their goals and not be swayed by short-term popularity, emphasizing that personal success should contribute to the success of the nation.
The Prime Minister highlighted various government initiatives aimed at empowering the youth, including Digital India, Startup India, and Khelo India. He noted that these programs provide access to the internet, learning resources, and platforms for aspiring entrepreneurs and sportspersons.
In his address, Modi paid tribute to Mata Gujri Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji, whose teachings continue to empower generations. He stated that Veer Bal Diwas embodies the resolve to protect Indianness and serves as a reminder of the importance of courage, conviction, and righteousness. The celebration of Veer Bal Diwas, he said, helps create a platform to recognize and encourage brave and talented youth.
