The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered the suspension of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil Singh Jasrotia following allegations of assaulting a Block Development Officer (BDO). The incident reportedly occurred on November 10 near the Vikram Chowk area of Jammu.
According to Government Order No. 541-Home of 2025, the suspension was initiated under Rule 31(1) of the J&K Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules, 1956. The order, signed by Chandraker Bharti, Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department, was issued with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor.
The suspended officer, Sunil Singh Jasrotia, was serving as the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) for Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, at the time of the alleged incident. He has now been attached to the Police Headquarters, J&K, pending an inquiry into the matter. During the period of suspension, he will remain at the headquarters to facilitate the inquiry and ensure administrative oversight.
The alleged victim, Azhar Khan, is a Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officer and the Block Development Officer (BDO) for Nagrota. He was also the nodal officer for transport for the Nagrota by-elections. Reports indicate that the alleged physical assault occurred after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
Following the alleged assault, JKAS officers reportedly demanded action against the DSP and undertook mass casual leave in protest. The suspension of the senior police officer occurred on the same day that the ruling National Conference government experienced defeats in the Nagrota and Budgam bypolls.
Sources within the Home Department have indicated that the inquiry will proceed under established rules, and further action will be determined based on the findings submitted by the concerned authorities. They added that such disciplinary measures are part of routine accountability mechanisms within the police administration.
