Pochettino's USA World Cup Roster Strategy: Compassion and Tough Choices in Final Team Selection.

U.S. Men's National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino is taking a unique approach to the upcoming 2026 World Cup roster selection, prioritizing the emotional well-being of his players. Unlike previous coaches who have called in larger squads and then made cuts just before the tournament, Pochettino intends to bring only the final 26-man roster to the last pre-World Cup training camp. He believes that being involved in the process and then being sent home is more cruel than the initial shock of not making the final cut.

Pochettino's decision reflects a growing awareness of the psychological impact of roster cuts on athletes. Many players invest significant time and effort, both physically and mentally, in preparing for the World Cup, and being cut at the last minute can be devastating.

Past U.S. coaches have faced controversy for their handling of roster cuts. Jurgen Klinsmann sparked outrage in 2014 when he cut Landon Donovan, a long-time star, after a training session. In 1994, Jeff Agoos famously burned his uniform after being dropped by Bora Milutinovic. Bob Bradley informed several players, including Alejandro Bedoya and Brian Ching, of their exclusion from the 2010 World Cup team in late-night hotel meetings.

Pochettino acknowledged that a larger training camp squad would provide an opportunity to evaluate injured players and have potential replacements readily available. However, he emphasized the importance of considering the human aspect and avoiding unnecessary cruelty. He doesn't want players to experience the disappointment of intense training followed by being sent home.

Since taking over as coach in October 2024, Pochettino has selected 71 players. Teams are required to submit a preliminary roster of 55 players to FIFA before finalizing the 26-man squad. The U.S. Soccer Federation plans to have players report to their new complex in Fayetteville, Georgia, with training set to begin on May 27. The Americans are expected to play two friendlies before their World Cup opener on June 12 in Inglewood, California.

Pochettino recognizes the importance of team chemistry and is considering how the group dynamic will factor into his decisions. He jokingly said, "You cannot be Harry Potter, no? — and you touch and say: create chemistry". He communicates with players through news conferences and media messages, both those in camp and those still with their clubs.

With the World Cup approaching, Pochettino faces tough decisions, particularly with the depth in midfield and uncertainty in the goalkeeper and forward positions. Matt Turner is currently the starting goalkeeper, but Pochettino has indicated an open competition for the role.

Following a friendly against Paraguay and a match against Uruguay, only two more friendlies in March remain before Pochettino finalizes his World Cup roster. Defender Tim Ream noted the limited time left, framing it as "10 training sessions".
