Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has dismissed recent rumors suggesting his resignation from his post as KPCC chief, asserting his health is "perfectly fine" and reaffirming his commitment to the Congress party. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Shivakumar described himself as a "loyal soldier" of the Congress and emphasized that there is no reason for him to step down from his responsibilities.
"My mental, physical and political health is good," Shivakumar stated, dismissing speculation about internal party rifts or any health concerns influencing his position. He reiterated his dedication to the party, emphasizing his role in building the Congress in Karnataka and his intention to continue serving as long as the party leadership desires. "I have worked to build the party day and night, and I will continue to do so," he affirmed.
Shivakumar highlighted several key responsibilities that necessitate his continued presence as KPCC President. These include overseeing the establishment of 100 new Congress offices across Karnataka, with foundation stones to be laid by December. He is also working to finalize the release date for his book, 'Gandhi Bharat'. Furthermore, he noted the importance of celebrating the Congress foundation day on December 28th, emphasizing his role in organizing and executing these crucial events.
Shivakumar is scheduled to meet with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to finalize a date for the foundation-laying ceremony for the new Congress offices. He expressed his wish for both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to participate in the ceremony and is seeking a date before the start of the Parliament session on December 1st.
Addressing speculation regarding a potential cabinet reshuffle, Shivakumar distanced himself from the matter, stating that it is the Chief Minister's prerogative to discuss with the high command. He clarified that his meeting with Kharge is primarily to finalize the dates for the Congress office foundation stone laying ceremonies.
Rumors of a leadership change have circulated amid reports of a "2.5-year formula" that party leaders purportedly agreed upon after regaining power in May 2023, potentially paving the way for Shivakumar to take over as Chief Minister. However, Shivakumar has dismissed media speculation about a possible transfer of power after two and a half years, stating that there has been no discussion on the issue between him, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, or the high command. He has also publicly dismissed any rifts with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
D.K. Shivakumar has a long and influential career in the Indian National Congress. He is the current Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, a position he has held since May 2023, along with the portfolios of Water Resources, Bengaluru Development and Town Planning, and Bengaluru Urban District In-charge. He has been the President of the Karnataka PCC since 2020. Shivakumar has been a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, representing Kanakapura since 2008 and previously representing Sathanur from 1989 to 2008.
