As Delhiites seek refuge from the scorching heat, the hills of Himachal Pradesh, traditionally a cool escape, are also experiencing unusually high temperatures, prompting a rush to higher altitudes. While Delhi recorded its first heatwave of the summer with temperatures soaring past 40°C in early April, Himachal Pradesh is also feeling the heat, with temperatures in some areas crossing 40°C.
The early arrival of the heatwave in Delhi has led many residents to seek cooler climates, with Himachal Pradesh being a popular choice. However, tourists arriving in Himachal Pradesh have expressed disappointment, finding that the hill stations are not as cool as they expected. While areas like Manali, Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur are still considered hill regions with "normal" temperatures, they are running 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. In late April 2025, Una exceeded 41°C. Shimla experienced a minimum temperature of 17.2ºC, which is 3.7º above the usual, while Manali’s night temperature was 9.5ºC, 1.5º higher than normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of continued heatwave conditions. Simultaneously, a heat wave alert was also issued for several parts of Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla predicted that the heat wave would continue in Una, Kullu, and Mandi until April 30. However, a weak Western Disturbance was expected to bring relief to Himachal Pradesh from the evening of May 1, bringing rainfall and cooling.
The rising temperatures in Himachal Pradesh have raised concerns about the impact of climate change on the region. Some tourists have noted that the environmental changes and global warming are clearly visible in the mountains. Despite the heat, Himachal Pradesh remains a popular tourist destination, with many seeking to escape the even more intense heat of the plains. Popular destinations include Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, and Kullu. The best time to visit Himachal Pradesh is generally from October to June, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C. However, those seeking cooler temperatures may need to venture to higher altitudes or wait for the arrival of the monsoon season.
