In response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, the Indian armed forces conducted targeted missile strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation, dubbed "Operation Sindoor," targeted nine terror sites, including a Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold in Bahawalpur. The strikes were a direct response to the Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 25 Indian tourists and one Nepali citizen.
The Indian Defence Ministry stated that the strikes were precise and restrained, carefully avoiding engagement with the Pakistani military. According to reports, the targeted locations were actively involved in planning and executing cross-border terrorist attacks against India. The strikes are intended to dismantle terror infrastructure and send a strong message to those orchestrating attacks against India.
Pakistan's army confirmed the Indian strikes, stating that missiles targeted Kotli and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as Bahawalpur in the Punjab province. The Pakistan army vowed to respond at a time and place of its choosing, and has closed its airspace for all air traffic for 48 hours. They also reported that the Indian strikes resulted in casualties, including the death of a child and injuries to a woman and a man.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated since the Pahalgam terror attack. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to punish the perpetrators of the attack. Security drills are being conducted across India in response to the heightened tensions. The Indian Air Force is also carrying out routine military exercises in Rajasthan, near the International Border with Pakistan.
