In a decisive response to the growing threat of cross-border terrorism, India has conducted targeted strikes on terror camps within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation, dubbed "Operation Sindoor," was launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, in retaliation for the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
The Indian Armed Forces精准地击中了位于巴基斯坦和巴控克什米尔地区的九个恐怖主义目标。 These targets were reportedly linked to banned outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen. According to sources, the strikes resulted in the killing of over 70 terrorists and the wounding of more than 60, significantly degrading the operational capabilities of these outfits. JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar reportedly claimed that 10 members of his family and four of his aides were killed in the strikes.
The Ministry of Defence has described the operation as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," emphasizing that it targeted only terrorist infrastructure, such as training camps, and avoided Pakistani military or government facilities. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the strikes were designed to "deter" and "pre-empt" further cross-border attacks.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that "Operation Sindoor" demonstrates the government's "zero-tolerance policy against terrorism" and is a "befitting reply" to those who challenge India's borders. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the armed forces for their retaliation, stating that India has exercised its "right to respond" to the attack on its soil in a "thoughtful and measured manner".
The strikes have prompted a range of reactions from the international community. Some countries have expressed concern over the escalating tensions and called for restraint and diplomatic solutions. Others have supported India's right to self-defense and condemned terrorism.
The US President Donald Trump said that he hopes it ends very quickly. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he is closely monitoring the situation. China has called for calm and restraint. Israel's ambassador to India, Ruven Azar, supported India's actions, emphasizing that terrorists should not have a place to hide from their crimes and reinforced that Israel stands by India's right to self-defense. Russia's foreign ministry expressed serious concern over the escalating military tension between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to exercise restraint and condemned all forms of terrorism.
While Pakistan has condemned the strikes and alleged civilian casualties, India has maintained that its actions were targeted and proportionate. There have been reports of clashes along the Line of Control (LoC) with artillery and small arms fire being exchanged by both sides.
The Kartarpur corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab's Gurdaspur district was temporarily shut down. Several airports in both India and Pakistan were also closed, and numerous flights were cancelled.
