Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply, marked by a series of cross-border attacks and retaliatory measures. The catalyst for the recent surge in hostilities appears to be the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025, where 26 civilians were killed. India has responded with "Operation Sindoor," targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Pakistan has retaliated with attacks on multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan, reportedly using drones and missiles. Cities like Jammu and Jaisalmer have experienced explosions and blackouts. Military stations in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur were also targeted. India claims to have intercepted many of the incoming missiles and drones.
In response to Pakistan's actions, India claims to have shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet and two JF-17 fighter jets. There are also reports of an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) being destroyed. Pakistan has denied these claims. India Today reported that Lahore has been left defenseless after India neutralized its China-made aerial defense system in its counterattack. India has also reportedly launched a counterattack on Lahore, targeting the city with drones.
The situation remains highly volatile, with reports of heavy artillery fire along the Line of Control (LoC). Border Security Force (BSF) has sealed off a 100 km radius along the International Border and LoC. Blackouts have been enforced in key northern towns, including Uri and Baramulla. Power cuts were initiated in Jammu and Amritsar to support uninterrupted air defense operations.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with concerns raised in the British Parliament and calls for de-escalation. Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that Pakistan deserves a larger retaliation at a place, time and “manner of its choosing”. India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s "targeted and measured response" to cross-border terrorism.
Amid the escalating tensions, there have been reports of misinformation and propaganda from both sides. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has refuted claims of an Indian post being destroyed by the Pakistani Army. There are also claims and counter-claims about the downing of aircraft, with deepfake videos circulating on social media.
