As of May 11, 2025, fuel prices across India remain subject to dynamic pricing, a system implemented in June 2017 that allows for daily revisions based on fluctuations in crude oil costs and the exchange rate between the rupee and the US dollar. This mechanism aims to enhance transparency and curb speculative practices in the petroleum market.
In Delhi, petrol is priced at ₹94.77 per liter, showing no change from the previous day. Mumbai residents are paying ₹103.50 per liter for petrol. Kolkata's petrol price is ₹105.01 per liter. Chennai offers petrol at ₹100.80 per liter.
Concerning diesel, the prices across major Indian cities vary. In Delhi, the diesel rate is ₹87.62 per liter, while Mumbai has it at ₹89.97 per liter. Diesel in Kolkata costs ₹91.76 per liter, and Chennai's rate is ₹92.34 per liter.
Across Maharashtra, the average diesel price is ₹91.24 per liter. There has been no price change since May 10, 2025. The state saw diesel prices begin the month at Rs 90.95 per litre. Throughout May, the highest recorded rate for diesel was Rs. 92.12, while the lowest was Rs. 90.03.
Several factors impact these daily price adjustments, including the cost of crude oil, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and shifts in global markets. Geopolitical tensions and supply-chain issues also play a crucial role in the pricing. Furthermore, taxes and dealer commissions influence the final price consumers encounter, with Value Added Tax (VAT) differing from state to state.
It's worth noting that a recent decision by Indian Oil to adjust dealer margins, following the resolution of a legal dispute, is not expected to significantly impact retail prices for consumers.
