Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Anita Anand, a politician of Indian origin, as Canada's new Minister of Foreign Affairs. Anand, who was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Indian immigrant parents, has previously held several key cabinet positions. She is the first visible minority in Canadian history to hold the role.
Anand's appointment comes as part of a major Cabinet reshuffle, with Mélanie Joly, the previous Foreign Minister, moved to the role of Minister of Industry. The reshuffle reflects Prime Minister Carney's focus on building a stronger economy, defining a new economic and security relationship with the United States, reducing the cost of living, and ensuring community safety.
Anand was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs on May 13, 2025. During the swearing-in ceremony, she placed her hand on the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, continuing a tradition she has followed in previous Cabinet appointments.
Prior to her appointment as Foreign Minister, Anand served as Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. She has also served as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, President of the Treasury Board, Minister of National Defence, and Minister of Public Services and Procurement. As Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Anand played a crucial role in securing vaccines, personal protective equipment, and rapid tests for Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Minister of National Defence, she spearheaded efforts to address sexual misconduct and foster cultural change within the Canadian Armed Forces, while also leading Canada's support for Ukraine following Russia's invasion.
Before entering politics, Anand had a distinguished career as a scholar, lawyer, and researcher. She was a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto, specializing in corporate governance and the regulation of capital markets. She holds degrees from Queen's University, Oxford University, Dalhousie University, and the University of Toronto.
As Foreign Minister, Anand will play a key role in shaping Canada's foreign policy. Canada's foreign policy priorities include fostering economic diversification beyond the United States, strengthening trade and security ties with Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, and addressing global threats such as climate change and cyber security. Other key issues include Canada-US relations and relations with India.
Anand's appointment has been welcomed as a sign of inclusive leadership, with many noting the historic significance of her being the first Hindu to serve in Canada's federal Cabinet.
