In the wake of heightened tensions and cross-border exchanges, India and Pakistan's Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) have agreed to uphold the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and continue with confidence-building measures. This agreement, reached during a hotline conversation on May 12, 2025, aims to de-escalate the situation and promote peace between the two nations.
The DGMOs agreed to maintain the ceasefire and avoid any aggressive or hostile actions against each other. Discussions also encompassed potential measures for troop reduction along the borders and forward areas. This move signifies a mutual understanding to de-escalate the military presence in sensitive zones, potentially reducing the risk of accidental skirmishes or escalations.
The recent tensions were triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians. India responded with "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan retaliated, leading to a series of strikes and counter-strikes between the two sides.
The situation de-escalated following diplomatic efforts, with the DGMOs agreeing to a ceasefire effective May 10, 2025. While initial reports suggested violations of the ceasefire, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement during the DGMO-level talks.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has maintained that relations and discussions with Pakistan will be strictly bilateral, focusing on terrorism concerns. He emphasized that any dialogue would center on Pakistan's need to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and act on the list of terrorists operating within its borders. Jaishankar also stated that the Indus Waters Treaty would be held in abeyance until cross-border terrorism ceases.
The agreement between the DGMOs to continue confidence-building measures is a positive step towards stabilizing the situation. By reducing troops along the border and refraining from provocative actions, both sides can create an environment conducive to dialogue and peaceful resolution of outstanding issues. However, the long-term success of this ceasefire and the resumption of meaningful dialogue will depend on addressing the root causes of the conflict, particularly terrorism and the resolution of the Kashmir issue.
