India-U.S. Relations Post-Trump: Enduring Ties and Saudi CEO's Perspective on Global Partnerships

In the evolving landscape of international relations, the ties between India, the United States, and Saudi Arabia remain dynamic and strategically significant. Recent developments, including meetings between leaders and economic shifts, highlight the continued importance of these relationships.

India-US Relations: A Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

The India-U.S. bilateral relationship has evolved into a "global strategic partnership," built on shared democratic values and converging interests on bilateral, regional, and global issues. This partnership has deepened over the years, with increased collaboration on issues such as counterterrorism and countering Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific.

In February 2025, President Trump hosted Prime Minister Modi in Washington, D.C., reaffirming the strength of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They launched the "U.S.-India COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century" to drive transformative change across key pillars of cooperation.

Defense cooperation remains a central element, with plans to sign a new ten-year Framework for the U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership in the 21st Century. The U.S. has expanded defense sales and co-production with India to strengthen interoperability and defense industrial cooperation. Both countries are also advancing military cooperation in multinational settings to promote global peace and security.

On the economic front, the leaders have set an ambitious goal to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, dubbed "Mission 500". They also plan to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The U.S. is India's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade totaling $129 billion in 2024. However, trade tensions exist, with India facing potential retaliatory measures due to its higher tariff rates compared to the U.S.

Cooperation extends to other areas, including space, with plans for a NASA-ISRO effort to send the first Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) and the joint "NISAR" mission to map changes to the Earth's surface. The U.S. also appreciates India's role as a developmental, humanitarian assistance, and net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.

Despite the overall positive trajectory, recent events have introduced some friction. President Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan were dismissed by India, which emphasized that dealings with Pakistan would be strictly bilateral. This has led to some anti-U.S. sentiment in India, with concerns about a reversal of the U.S. policy of de-hyphenating India and Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia: A Valued Partner and Strategic Ally

Saudi Arabia is considered a "trusted friend and strategic ally" of India, with bilateral relations expanding significantly since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the "limitless potential" of India's growing ties with Saudi Arabia.

Energy cooperation is a crucial pillar, with Saudi Arabia being a strong and reliable energy partner for India. As India's energy demands grow, Saudi Arabia is expected to remain a close partner in its energy security. The two countries are also exploring joint projects in refineries and petrochemicals.

The U.S. also shares a long-standing relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has evolved into a multifaceted partnership encompassing defense, trade, education, and tourism. The U.S.-Saudi relationship is described as "stronger than ever," with collaboration in security, commerce, culture, and joint efforts to resolve regional conflicts.

Geopolitical Implications

In the context of geopolitical competition, particularly with China, Iran, and Russia, India and Saudi Arabia are considered vital to U.S. interests. Strengthening economic and military relationships with these two countries is seen as paramount for bringing about peace and prosperity.

These relationships are not without their complexities. The U.S. seeks to discourage India from continuing to purchase weapons from Russia and to end the illicit oil trade between China and Iran. Balancing these competing interests requires careful diplomacy and strategic engagement.

Overall, the relationships between India, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia are multifaceted and crucial for regional and global stability. Despite occasional challenges and differing perspectives, the long-term strategic interests and shared values provide a strong foundation for continued cooperation and partnership.
