Amidst growing controversy and uncertainty surrounding its release, the producer of "Udaipur Files," Amit Jani, recently met with Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a "closed-door" meeting to discuss the film's fate. The meeting highlights the obstacles the film faces as it navigates legal and censorship hurdles.

"Udaipur Files" is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur who was killed for allegedly sharing a social media post supporting Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad. The film stars Vijay Raaz and was initially slated for release on July 11, 2025. However, the Delhi High Court issued a stay order on July 10, pending a decision from the central government on petitions seeking a ban, citing the film's potential to incite disharmony.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) initially ordered approximately 150 cuts to the film. Following revisions, "Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder" was cleared for theatrical release on August 8, 2025, with the Centre recommending six major modifications. These included a revised disclaimer, removal of frames expressing gratitude to certain individuals, and alterations to an AI-generated execution scene.

Amit Jani has received Y-category security due to alleged death threats on social media related to the film's release. This security detail includes 11 CRPF personnel for protection in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Jani expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for ensuring his protection.

The Supreme Court addressed the appeal against the stay order, directing involved parties to approach the High Court regarding the film's release approval with suggested cuts. A Supreme Court bench stated that the filmmaker's appeal against the High Court order was infructuous, as they accepted the July 21 order of the Centre, which cleared the release of the film subject to six cuts and modifications to the disclaimer. The bench added that it had not expressed any opinion on the merits of the case and that the High Court could adjudicate the issue of the film's release.

The film has already generated considerable interest and controversy. The "closed-door" meeting between Amit Jani and Ashwini Vaishnaw underscores the government's involvement in the film's journey to release, especially considering the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the potential impact on social harmony. The government withdrew recommended cuts, intending to revisit the cases before making a final decision.
