A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Madhya Pradesh has sparked controversy by claiming that military strikes against Pakistan were halted due to an order from the United Nations. Narendra Prajapati, a first-time MLA, made the statement during a "Tiranga Yatra" in Rewa, which was organized to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor.
Prajapati stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India would have "finished off" Pakistan, but the UN issued a ceasefire order. He also said Pakistan had been made to bite the dust in earlier wars. The MLA's remarks have been met with criticism and have stirred debate, with many questioning the accuracy and implications of such a statement. Following the backlash and after videos of his speech went viral, Prajapati claimed that his statement was being presented in a distorted way and that he spoke in a "surge of emotions". He further stated that the media distorted his statements. He later clarified that he meant to say "United States" but mistakenly said "United Nations".
The BJP-led Union government has offered a different account of the events, stating that Operation Sindoor, the military action launched after the Pahalgam terror attack, was stopped after the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan contacted his Indian counterpart, and the two countries reached an understanding. Official sources have supported this, stating that Pakistan requested peace talks following Operation Sindoor's impact.
The controversy surrounding Prajapati's statement coincides with remarks from other BJP figures praising Prime Minister Modi's role in military actions. Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda also faced criticism for stating that the country, its army, and soldiers have "bowed down at the feet" of PM Modi because of the successful execution of Operation Sindoor. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah received backlash for comments involving Col Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized the government for allegedly informing Pakistan about targeting terror infrastructure as part of Operation Sindoor, calling it a "crime" and questioning who authorized it. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had stated that India had informed Pakistan of the action against terror infrastructure on its soil, specifying that the strikes were not aimed at the Pakistani military.
Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has urged everyone to refrain from creating confusion over the success of Operation Sindoor. He added that the Indian armed forces destroyed the "sanctuary of sinners and territory of terrorists" in Pakistan during the operation.
Operation Sindoor has led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with accusations of misinformation campaigns from both sides. There have been claims and counter-claims regarding the downing of aircraft and the destruction of military infrastructure.
