The state of Manipur is in mourning following the death of Maharabam Prabo Singh, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer who was tragically killed by a lightning strike during an anti-Maoist operation in Jharkhand. Singh's death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from officials, colleagues, and the local community in Manipur.
The incident occurred on May 15, 2025, in the Saranda forests of Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, a known Maoist hotbed. Singh, a 46-year-old native of Imphal West district in Manipur, was the Second-in-Command of the CRPF's 26th Battalion and was leading a joint operation with the district police when heavy rain and lightning struck. Tragically, Singh was struck by lightning and died on the way to the hospital.
Assistant Commandant Subir Kumar Mandal from Bengal, ASI Chandlal Hansda, and Suresh Bhagat, both natives of Jharkhand were also injured during the incident. They were initially admitted to a SAIL-operated hospital at Kiriburu before being moved to Tata Main Hospital at Noamundi for advanced medical care. The wounded trio were then airlifted to Ranchi for further treatment.
The news of Singh's death has deeply saddened the people of Manipur, where he was remembered as a brave and dedicated officer. On Saturday, May 17, 2025, a large number of local people, family members, and senior officials gathered to bid a tearful farewell to the fallen CRPF officer. Singh's mortal remains arrived at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, where a wreath-laying ceremony was held to honor his sacrifice.
Kuldiep Singh, the Manipur government's Security Advisor and former Director General of CRPF, along with senior officials, legislators, and family members, paid tribute to Singh at the airport. From there, his body was taken to his home in Sekmai, Imphal West district, where his last rites were performed with full state honors.
CRPF DIG of Manipur and Nagaland Sector R. Duidang said that Singh had joined the central paramilitary force in 2006. He added, "Maharabam Prabo Singh had joined the central paramilitary force in 2006. He was a serious and efficient officer. The CRPF would never forget his sacrifice".
The CRPF also expressed its condolences and solidarity with the bereaved family. "The CRPF offers heartfelt tributes to the brave officer who laid down his life in the line of duty under such unfortunate circumstances. In this moment of profound grief, the entire force stands in solidarity with the bereaved family," the paramilitary force said in a post on X.
Singh's death is a stark reminder of the challenging and dangerous conditions faced by security personnel in Maoist-affected areas. It also marks the first lightning-related death of a commandant-rank officer in the Maoist-hit district. His sacrifice and service to the nation will be remembered by his family, colleagues, and the people of Manipur.
