A purported letter from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K. Kavitha to her father, K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), the party's president and former Chief Minister of Telangana, has ignited a significant political controversy. The letter, reportedly written after the BRS Silver Jubilee public meeting in Elkaturthy on April 27, 2025, expresses Kavitha's concerns regarding the party's stance towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the overall political strategy.
In the six-page letter, which was leaked to the media on May 22, 2025, while Kavitha was on a US tour, she evaluates KCR's speech at the Elkaturthy meeting and conveys the sentiments of party cadres and leaders regarding the party's current position. A central theme of the letter is Kavitha's belief that KCR should have adopted a more aggressive stance against the BJP in his address.
Kavitha's letter highlights a concern among BRS cadres that the party's leadership might be softening its stance against the BJP, potentially hinting at a future alliance. She points to KCR dedicating only two minutes of his speech to criticizing the BJP, leading to speculation and unease within the party ranks. She wrote, "I may be feeling so because of the suffering I have undergone. But because you spoke against the BJP for just 2 minutes, the cadre has started feeling that in the future, BRS may have an alliance with the BJP. You should have targeted the BJP more, daddy".
Adding to the cadre's apprehension, Kavitha notes the BRS's decision not to field candidates in recent MLC elections. This move has been interpreted by some, particularly the Congress party, as a tacit understanding between the BRS and BJP, further fueling concerns about a potential alliance. Kavitha stressed that Congress has lost its hold at the grassroots level, she expressed BRS cadres' concern that the people could be looking at the BJP as an alternative.
Beyond the BJP issue, Kavitha's letter touches upon several other critical points. She felt that KCR failed to take the message to the masses that 'Telangana meant KCR' and 'KCR meant Telangana.' She said that the party cadres also expected that he would comment on changing the form of 'Telangana Thalli' and on the official state song 'Jaya Jayahe Telangana.' She also felt that the 'dhoom dhaam' cultural events held at the Silver Jubilee celebrations failed to fill excitement among the party cadres who attended. On the positive note, she said that the cadre's morale was high, and KCR saying 'Congress fail, fail, fail' was well appreciated.
The timing of the letter's leak is particularly noteworthy. It surfaces amidst ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project, with the Ghose Commission summoning KCR and his nephew T. Harish Rao for questioning. This adds another layer of complexity to the already tense political environment within the BRS.
Kavitha's letter also comes after she stirred controversy by claiming that “social justice was not delivered during the past ten years.” These remarks are being interpreted as strong criticism of her own father's governance. Amid speculation that KCR is preparing to hand over party leadership responsibilities to his son and BRS working president K T Rama Rao (KTR), Kavitha appears to have changed her tone—perhaps indicating resistance or concern.
The leaked letter has triggered intense debate and speculation within Telangana political circles. Questions are being raised about the internal dynamics of the BRS, the future direction of the party, and the potential for realignments in the state's political landscape. With Kavitha's return from the US expected soon, further developments and clarifications are anticipated, promising to keep this issue at the forefront of Telangana politics.
