Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have triggered flash floods, causing damage and prompting a "yellow" alert for several districts. On Saturday, May 24, 2025, flash floods in the Kullu district damaged approximately 20 to 25 vehicles parked on the roadside near Jagat Khana in Nirmand. According to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nirmand Manmohan Singh, no casualties were reported. The administration has attributed the flash floods to heavy rains, although local residents have suggested a cloudburst as the cause. Videos circulating on social media show vehicles being swept away by the floodwaters and debris. The level of the Satluj River has also risen.
The local meteorological center has issued a "yellow" warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, for all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh on May 27 and 28. The warning also extends to Sirmaur, Solan, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Chamba districts on May 25 and 26. Light rain is expected in isolated places in the higher hills and a few places in the mid-hills and plains on May 25.
In terms of rainfall, Rohru received 10 mm of rain, followed by 2.6 mm in Jubbarhatti, 2.4 mm in Jubbal, and 2 mm in Chamba. Gusty winds were recorded in various locations, with speeds between 37 and 56 kmph. Una recorded the highest temperature in the state at 39.2 degrees Celsius, while Keylong recorded the lowest at 7.3 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a wet spell for the next six days and has issued warnings for thunderstorms and lightning in several districts. Citizens are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.
Earlier in March 2025, heavy snowfall and rain disrupted life in many parts of Himachal Pradesh, blocking over 200 roads and causing power outages. Avalanches, landslides, and flash floods were reported in several regions. In August 2024, cloudburst-triggered flash floods resulted in 22 deaths, with rescue operations underway for missing individuals. The floods affected areas in Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts, causing significant damage and road closures.
