The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday, May 24, 2025, warning of severe thunderstorms, rain, and high-speed winds. The alert, part of a Nowcast warning based on current weather conditions, cautioned residents to brace for potentially hazardous conditions over the next few hours.
According to the IMD, a thunderstorm cell was approaching Delhi and adjoining areas from the west/northwest. Under its influence, severe thunderstorm or dust-raising wind activity, accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 60-100 km/h, was expected to affect parts of the city and surrounding regions. The red alert, the highest level of weather warning, signifies a high likelihood of severe weather conditions posing a threat to life and property.
The advisory extended beyond Delhi, encompassing a wide swath of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, including cities such as Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, Panipat, Karnal, Hissar, and Meerut, as well as parts of Rajasthan. These regions were also expected to experience dust storms followed by thunderstorms, with gusty winds and frequent lightning.
The IMD urged residents to take necessary precautions, advising them to avoid open spaces and refrain from seeking shelter under trees. They also cautioned against taking shelter near weak walls or unstable structures and advised staying away from water bodies. Possible impacts from the thunderstorm include tree uprooting and branch breaking, moderate damage to crops like bananas and papaya, and the falling of dry tree limbs due to strong winds. Dust storms were also likely in some areas.
This extreme weather follows a similar storm on Wednesday night that resulted in at least two fatalities in Delhi. One man with disabilities was killed when an electricity pole fell near the Lodhi Road flyover, and another 22-year-old man died after a tree fell on him in northeast Delhi's Gokulpuri. Additionally, a sandstorm and heavy rain left several people injured.
The recent weather events highlight the increasing intensity and unpredictability of pre-monsoon weather patterns. The IMD's forecast emphasizes that while the immediate storm will pass in the next few hours, the threat of further weather-related disturbances remains, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents are urged to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves against the ongoing threats posed by the storms and strong winds.
The red alert issued by the IMD underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance during periods of extreme weather. By taking proactive measures and staying informed about the latest weather updates, residents can minimize the risks associated with these events and ensure their safety and well-being.
