From behind bars, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has launched a fresh salvo against the country's military leadership, specifically targeting Army Chief General Asim Munir. Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023, didn't hold back in his criticism following Munir's recent promotion to Field Marshal.
Khan took to social media platform X to express his sentiments, suggesting that the title of "King" would be more fitting for Munir, given what he described as the "jungle law" prevailing in Pakistan. His statement implied that the rule of law and morality, the cornerstones of democracy, have been eroded in the country. This jab comes amidst already heightened tensions between Khan's supporters and the military establishment.
The promotion of Gen. Munir to Field Marshal is noteworthy as he is only the second military officer in Pakistan's history to achieve this rank. The promotion reportedly came in light of the recent conflict with India, particularly after the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in 26 fatalities. India responded with "Operation Sindoor" that targeted terror infrastructure inside Pakistan.
Khan's remarks also addressed the rumors of a potential deal being brokered for his release. He firmly denied any such negotiations, stating that these claims are baseless lies. However, in the same breath, he extended an invitation to the military establishment for dialogue, should they genuinely prioritize the interests and future of Pakistan.
He painted a grim picture of his experiences in jail, alleging a manipulated judicial system. He cited a resumed "farcial trial" in the Toshakhana-II case, claiming that court proceedings are dictated by a single colonel. He further alleged being denied basic rights such as family visits, medical care, and access to books, calling it a "continued violation of court orders and laws".
Khan also touched upon the broader challenges facing Pakistan, including external threats, a surge in terrorism, and an economic crisis. He stressed the need for unity and stated he had never asked for anything for himself.
The context of Khan's statements is crucial. Tensions between India and Pakistan have been on edge, particularly after the Pahalgam attack. India responded to the attack with a strong message, launching Operation Sindoor. India has also reportedly taken other actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, expulsion of Pakistani military advisors, revocation of visas, and closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing.
Recent reports also highlight India's strong stance against Pakistan at international forums like the UN, citing Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism. India has stated at the UN that 20,000 Indians have been killed in terrorist attacks.
