The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Moti Ram Jat, on suspicion of spying for Pakistan. The arrest was made in Delhi, and the accused has been remanded to NIA custody until June 6th by a special court. Jat, an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) with the CRPF, is accused of sharing classified information related to national security with Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs) since 2023.

According to the NIA, Jat was "actively involved in espionage activity" and was receiving funds from the PIOs through various channels. The CRPF, in coordination with central agencies, had been closely monitoring Jat's social media activity and found that he had "acted in violation of established norms and protocols." Consequently, he was handed over to the NIA for further investigation.

The CRPF has dismissed Jat from service with effect from May 21, 2025, under the relevant provisions of the Constitution of India read with the CRPF Rules. This swift action underscores the seriousness with which the CRPF views the allegations against Jat.

Sources indicate that the case might involve honey-trapping, where Pakistani intelligence officers approached Jat via social media, posing as a woman, and later extracted sensitive information from him, including details about convoy movements. He was posted for law and order duty.

The NIA has registered a case against Jat, including sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), indicating the gravity of the charges. The agency is currently interrogating him to uncover the full extent of his involvement and the information he may have compromised.

This incident highlights the ongoing threat of espionage and the importance of vigilance within security forces. It also underscores the sophisticated methods used by foreign intelligence agencies to gather information, including the use of social media and honey-trapping techniques. The close monitoring of social media activity by the CRPF and central agencies played a crucial role in detecting Jat's suspicious activities. The quick action taken by the CRPF, including his dismissal from service, sends a strong message about the consequences of such breaches of trust and national security.
