According to recent reports, 87,812 Indian citizens were granted Canadian citizenship in 2024, constituting the largest group by nationality to do so. This figure represents approximately 23% of the 3.74 lakh individuals who became Canadian citizens during the year. The increase in Indian citizens compared to 2023, when 78,714 Indians were granted citizenship, highlights Canada's appeal to Indian immigrants and the growing number of individuals from India choosing to call Canada home.

Canada's annual Citizenship Week, observed from May 26 to June 1, serves as a period to celebrate the country's diversity and acknowledge the contributions of immigrants. Lena Metlege Diab, Canada's immigration minister, has emphasized that citizenship is more than just a legal status; it signifies joining a community, respecting indigenous history, and actively participating in building a stronger and fairer nation. While the overall number of immigrants is set to decrease, India remains the top source country for permanent residents, with 1.27 lakh Indians receiving this status in 2024.
