Gumi, South Korea – May 28, 2025 – India showcased its athletic prowess at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea, with a dominant performance in the mixed relay and several other athletes securing silver medals. The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team clinched gold, successfully defending their title, while Tejaswin Shankar (decathlon), Rupal Chaudhary (400m), Pooja and Chithravel (triple jump) secured silver medals in their respective events.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the 4x400m mixed relay, where the Indian team, composed of Rupal Chaudhary, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, Vishal TK, and Subha Venkatesan, finished first with a time of 3:18.12. They beat China (3:20.52) and Sri Lanka (3:21.95). Santosh Kumar Tamilarasan ran the first leg and gave India the lead. Subha Venkatesan was the only returning member from the team which won gold in the same event at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok.
Rupal Chaudhary had a particularly successful day, winning gold in the mixed relay hours after winning silver in the women's 400m.
Tejaswin Shankar also shone, winning a silver medal in the decathlon with a total score of 7618 points. He finished behind Fei Xiang of China (7634). Keisuke Okuda of Japan took bronze (7602). With this medal, Tejaswin Shankar becomes the first Indian to win two decathlon medals in the Asian Athletics Championships, upgrading his decathlon bronze from 2023 to a silver medal in Gumi.
In other events, Chithravel's best effort of 16.90m in the triple jump was only behind China's Zhu Yaming (17.06m).
These accomplishments on Wednesday bring India's total medal count to eight: two gold, four silver, and two bronze. Gulveer Singh won India's first gold medal of the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in the men's 10,000m event on Tuesday. Servin Sebastian won India's first medal at the Gumi Asian Athletics Championships 2025, taking bronze in the men's 20km race walk event on the competition's first day.
Other performances of note include Vishal TK, who set a personal best of 45.57 seconds in the men's 400m, narrowly missing a podium finish. Jyothi Yarraji qualified for the final of the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.18. Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan qualified for the women's long jump final.
