Delhi-NCR experienced heavy rainfall this morning, bringing respite from the prevailing heat and humidity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for the city, forecasting light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The weather shift is expected to bring marginal relief from the humid conditions, with the maximum temperature likely to settle around 33 degrees Celsius. The capital recorded a minimum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees below the season's average, according to IMD data. Relative humidity was measured at 80 percent.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning over the next three days. According to the weather department, light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, are also expected during the evening and night hours.
The monsoon trough is directly over Delhi and passing over Suratgarh, Sirsa, Lucknow, Varanasi, Daltonganj, Bankura, Digha, and the Bay of Bengal. Active monsoon conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, north Rajasthan, and Chandigarh this coming week. Widespread overnight and early morning showers, including heavy spells, are likely to impact several cities, including Delhi.
Due to the downpour, some low-lying areas reported waterlogging. Commuters have been advised to plan accordingly, as brief spells of rain could affect road traffic in some areas.
The city's air quality remained in the 'satisfactory' category with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 82. An AQI between 51 and 100 is classified as satisfactory. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's (IITM) Air Quality Early Warning System stated that the air quality is likely to remain in the 'satisfactory' category for the next few days. The outlook for the subsequent six days suggests the air quality will be in the 'satisfactory' to 'moderate' category.
While the yellow alert suggests the possibility of moderate rainfall which is not severe, it might cause localized flooding in low-lying areas or disrupt outdoor activities. The weather office has also predicted light to moderate rainfall in neighboring states of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
