Apple is set to expand its retail footprint in Mumbai with the opening of its second store in the city. This move is part of a broader strategy to increase its presence in the Indian market, recognizing its potential for significant growth.
The new Apple store will be located in Borivali at the Sky City Mall. This will be the company's second outlet in Mumbai, complementing the existing flagship store in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) at Jio World Drive. The BKC store, which opened in April 2023, marked Apple's entry into the Indian retail market and has been a popular destination for Apple enthusiasts.
Apple's retail expansion in India is not limited to Mumbai. The company is also planning to open stores in other major cities, including Bengaluru, Noida, and Pune. The store in Bengaluru will be located in Phoenix Mall of Asia in Hebbal. Meanwhile, the Noida store will be situated in DLF Mall of India and the Pune store in Kopa Mall.
This expansion strategy aligns with Apple CEO Tim Cook's vision of India as a "major growth market." During the Q2 2025 earnings call, Cook confirmed that the company would be opening retail stores later this year. This commitment is further evidenced by Apple's ongoing recruitment efforts for these stores since March 2025.
The Bengaluru store, spanning approximately 7,997.8 square feet, will be comparable in size to the Delhi store at Select Citywalk, but smaller than the Mumbai BKC store, which measures over 20,000 square feet. Apple has signed a 10-year lease for the Bengaluru space, with rent payments of ₹2.09 crore annually (₹17.4 lakh per month), starting in August 2025. The lease commenced in November 2024. In addition to fixed rent, the agreement includes a revenue-sharing clause where Apple will pay 2% of store revenues for the first three years and 2.5% thereafter, capped at twice the annual guaranteed rent.
Apple's increased focus on India also extends to manufacturing. The company is reportedly planning to double iPhone production in India to 80 million units to meet the demand. Apple is also conducting "New Production Introduction" (NPI) for the upcoming iPhone 17 in India. Currently, Apple manufactures all four models of the iPhone 16 in India, including the premium Pro models.
The expansion comes at a time when Apple is shifting iPhone manufacturing from China to India, partly driven by US tariffs on China. The company aims to tap into India's growing smartphone market and increase exports to the US. In Q2 2025, CEO Tim Cook stated that the majority of iPhones sold in the US are expected to have India as their country of origin.
