DeWanna Bonner is hitting back at rumors fueled by Indiana Fever fans regarding her departure from the team. The veteran WNBA player, a three-time Sixth Woman of the Year, addressed the speculation on Saturday, refuting claims that her exit was due to being taken out of the starting lineup.

The end of June saw a surprising split between Bonner and the Indiana Fever. Bonner stated that "the fit didn't work out" despite an initial shared sense of purpose. This led to widespread speculation about the reasons behind her departure, with some fans suggesting she was unhappy about coming off the bench.

Bonner, who had been absent from the team since June 10, missing five straight games due to "personal reasons," was reportedly seeking an exit from the Fever because she didn't feel like she was a "fit" with the franchise. This fueled accusations that she quit on the team after losing her starting job.

In response to these accusations, Bonner posted a message on Instagram, stating, "A QUITTER!! Nah never been that!! 'Let's just make sure the apologies, are just as loud as the disrespect!!' ".

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Bonner directly addressed the rumors, stating that coming off the bench "wasn't ever the issue". "That's never been me. I have no problems coming off the bench. I have never been that player. I don't feel like I have that reputation," she added.

Bonner's departure marks a rather anticlimactic end to her brief time in Indianapolis. The Indiana Fever had high hopes for the 2025 season, particularly after acquiring Bonner, a seasoned veteran. The team hoped that Bonner's experience would help guide their young core, which includes Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, Natasha Howard, and Sophie Cunningham. Some even speculated that the team could contend for a title.

Bonner's relationship with the Fever began positively, as she became the third-highest player in WNBA history for career points during the season opener. However, things took a turn when coach Stephanie White moved Bonner to the bench in favor of Lexie Hull.

Following a loss against the Atlanta Dream on June 10, Bonner was sidelined due to "personal reasons," and neither side has fully disclosed the details. This led to increased speculation, culminating in reports that Bonner had lost interest in playing for Indiana. The team then waived her and, in exchange, brought in Aari McDonald, a player favored by fans and the team.

Amid the rumors of her departure, Bonner posted a brief message on her Instagram: "My greatest loves!! I love you! 🖤🫶🏾," alongside photos of her twin daughters.

Despite the circumstances surrounding her departure, Bonner has expressed no regrets about her time with the Indiana Fever. "I wouldn't do anything differently," she said, adding, "I think my journey is my journey, and I'm going to accept that. It carried me to where I am now in Phoenix, and it happened that way for a reason".

Several teams are reportedly interested in signing Bonner, including the Phoenix Mercury and the Atlanta Dream. The Sun, Washington Mystics, and Golden State Valkyries may also be interested.

Fever General Manager Amber Cox addressed the situation, stating that "we just couldn't get it to a place where it felt good for her… it wasn't a decision any of us made lightly". Bonner also sent a parting message, stating, "I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise… I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players".
