The Congress party is strongly condemning the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh Parivar, over the arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh. The party has called the situation a "mob trial" and is demanding the immediate release of the nuns.
According to reports, two Malayali Catholic nuns, Preetha Mary and Vandana Francis, were arrested by Chhattisgarh police after being accused of engaging in forced religious conversions by members of the Bajrang Dal. The incident occurred at Durg railway station where the nuns were taken into custody. Sisters Vandana and Preetha are members of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church headquartered in Cherthala, Kerala. At the time of the incident, the nuns were accompanying three young women to Chhattisgarh, reportedly for domestic work.
The group was stopped at the railway station by a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) because they did not have platform tickets. During questioning, the young women stated they were traveling to work under the care of the nuns. One of the girl's brothers was also present. The TTE then informed local Bajrang Dal members who arrived at the station and began accusing the nuns of attempting to convert the girls. Despite the women stating that they were already Christians and had consent from their parents, including copies of ID cards, the mob insisted it was a case of forced conversion. The group was forced to leave the train and were escorted to the police station by the police and Bajrang Dal members. The police registered charges of human trafficking and forced conversion against the two nuns. It was also claimed that one of the girls told police she had been taken without her consent.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and protests. Kerala's Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, has strongly condemned the incident and called out the pattern of targeted harassment by right-wing groups. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has also protested the arrest, alleging that right-wing outfits fabricated the case and seeking the Prime Minister's intervention. The CBCI is demanding protection for religious minorities.
Congress leader K.C. Venugopal stated that attacks on minorities have increased in BJP-ruled states. The Congress party has labeled the arrest as religious persecution and is demanding the immediate release of the nuns. Protests have erupted in Kerala over the arrest.
