The parents of Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla are experiencing a mix of excitement and pride as their son prepares to launch to the International Space Station (ISS) tomorrow, June 10, 2025. Shubhanshu is poised to become the first Indian astronaut to reach the ISS in 41 years, following Rakesh Sharma's pioneering spaceflight.
According to his father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, Shubhanshu has always displayed a strong sense of determination. In an interview with NDTV, Mr. Shukla shared insights into his son's character and journey. "Shubhanshu has always been the kind of person who, when he decides to do something, puts in all his hard work and dedication. He's been working hard for this mission, too," he said.
Shubhanshu's path to becoming an astronaut began at a young age. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) at 16, demonstrating an early commitment to serving his country. His father recalled initially hoping for him to pursue a government job but emphasized that the family never stood in the way of his dreams. "We wanted him to have a government job initially. But we never stopped him from following his dream, joining the force. We never even thought of saying no," Mr. Shambhu told NDTV.
Mr. Shukla also highlighted his son's unwavering focus and dedication to self-improvement. "He always kept preparing for one mission after another. We get to know when he has completed it. And then, he always strives to do more." He fondly mentioned the difficulty of disciplining Shubhanshu, saying, "We can never shout at him either, because no matter how angry we are, when he comes in front of us, we calm down naturally."
Asha Shukla, Shubhanshu's mother, shared anecdotes about his studious nature during his childhood. She told NDTV that he was never mischievous and always excelled in his studies. "He was brilliant at studying. He was never mischievous. There were no complaints from school," she said.
Shubhanshu's journey to the ISS is a momentous occasion for India. Prime Minister Modi officially announced Shubhanshu's name as one of the four astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission in 2024. His upcoming mission has generated immense anticipation and excitement across the nation. The global astronaut community has also sent their best wishes to Group Captain Shukla as he prepares for his 14-day mission aboard the Falcon 9 Crew Dragon Capsule, launching from Pad 39 A of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
NDTV will provide comprehensive coverage of Shubhanshu Shukla's historic spaceflight.
