Cardoso, who took over as head coach in December 2024, has been working to instill a dynamic and adaptable style of play within the team. Sundowns' campaign kicks off against Ulsan HD FC from South Korea on June 18th at the Inter & Co Stadium. Following this, they will face formidable opponents in German Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund on June 21st, and Brazilian Serie A champions Fluminense on June 25th. The group stage presents a stern test, but Cardoso is confident in his team's ability to compete.

Notably, Themba Zwane, the team's captain, has been included in the squad after being an unused substitute in both legs of the recent CAF Champions League final.
