An Air India flight, en route from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi, India, was forced to make an emergency landing at Phuket International Airport on Friday, June 13, 2025, following an onboard bomb threat. The flight, identified as AI 379, had 156 passengers on board.
According to airport authorities, the flight took off from Phuket at 9:30 AM local time (0230 GMT). However, shortly after departure, the aircraft made a wide loop over the Andaman Sea before returning to Phuket. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 confirmed the unusual flight path.
Upon receiving the bomb threat, the pilot requested and was granted permission for an emergency landing. Phuket International Airport immediately activated its Airport Contingency Plan (ACP), Chapter 3, which outlines the procedures for handling bomb threats.
An official from Airports of Thailand (AOT) stated that all 156 passengers were safely escorted from the aircraft in accordance with emergency protocols. While AOT has not released specific details regarding the nature of the bomb threat, the airport confirmed that all necessary safety measures were being taken. Air India has yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
The emergency landing occurred amidst heightened concerns regarding aviation safety in India. This incident comes a day after a fatal Air India crash in Ahmedabad, where over 240 people were killed shortly after takeoff. Furthermore, Indian airlines and airports have experienced a surge in hoax bomb threats. Reports indicate that nearly 1,000 such hoax calls and messages were recorded in the first 10 months of the previous year, a tenfold increase compared to 2023.
The Transport Ministry reported that Air India flight AI 379 has safely landed at Phuket International Airport, and the airport is currently following the necessary safety protocols.
